The BMW 7-series is BMW's flagship full-size luxury sedan. If there's a nicety available, this car probably has it. Space, power, night vision? As much as you want. Up against the Mercedes S-class and Audi A8 the BMW is the sportiest choice, with superior handling. Don't worry though; the ride doesn't suffer as a result. The design was all-new for 2008 and as such is starting to show some age, but that doesn't mean it's not still one of the nicest interiors on the market. Every 7-series model comes with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive is available on most engines. New for 2015 is the addition of the 740Ld, with a 255 hp, 413 lb-ft 3.0L diesel inline six.
The 7-series is available in both short and long wheelbase, with short being more of a figure of speech at just over five metres long, and long wheelbase being 14 cm longer. the short wheelbase model comes only as 750i xDrive, which means a 4.4L twin-turbo V8, 445 hp, and all-wheel drive. The long wheelbase car comes as 740Li xDrive with a 3.0L twin-turbo inline six and 315 hp, 740Ld xDrive with the diesel mentioned above, 750Li xDrive with the same 4.4L V8 as the 750i, and ActiveHybrid 7 which has the 3.0L gas six and a hybrid powertrain with electric motor and lithium ion battery to make 355 hp and increase fuel economy. Top of the line is the 760Li which features one of the few remaining V12 engines available today. 6.0L, twin-turbos, 536 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from one of the smoothest possible engine layouts. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.
All 7-series models have regenerative braking and stop/start function, to help increase fuel economy. 740Li comes with soft close doors, ambiance lightling, adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, leatherette dash, power adjustable seats with heat for the front and rear, Nappa leather, four-zone climate control, 16-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo with iDrive and a 10.2-inch touchscreen. All 740, 750, and Hybrid models are similarly equipped as standard. The options list is extensive as well, starting with an M Sport pack that adds an M body kit, 19 or 20-inch wheels, unique sport steering wheel, and M accents throughout. Driver Assistance Plus adds active blind spot warnings, lane guidance, and a surround-view camera. The Executive pack adds power rear sunshades and ventilated seats. A Bang & Olufsen stereo is also an option, as is a night vision camera system. 760Li gets ventilated seats as standard.
Fuel economy for the 7-series is rated at 10.2 L/100 km city, 7.1 highway for 740Ld, 12.1/8.1 for 740Li, 15.2/9.8 for 750i and 750Li, 18.7/11.6 for 760Li and 10.6 city, 7.7 highway for ActiveHybrid 7L.
